Backcountry Horsemanship Clinic Featuring Craig Cameron
Join us for an opportunity to experience one of the most spectacular wilderness areas in the world while learning the ropes of how to handle your horse and camp in the backcountry from the “Cowboy Clinician”. His unique training style is featured on RFDTV in his show ‘Ride Smart’ and ‘The Extreme Cowboy Race’, and in his Western Horseman book, ‘Ride Smart’. Craig is respected as one of the best clinicians in the world and will conduct some of his famous instruction on this trip.
The first day, we will have a basic horsemanship clinic at the ranch, preparing our horses (and ourselves) for the next four days of high country adventure. Each participant will be individually evaluated by Craig. Exercises that test both horse and rider are part of the itinerary as the day progresses to more advanced maneuvers geared to the specific needs and desires of the group. A gourmet lunch, drinks and snacks are provided for the participants. Boarding is included for the horses.
On the second day, we will load up our horses and our gear and head for basecamp in the high country. The ride to camp is spectacular and will test both horse and rider and tantalize your senses with amazing scenery, free-flowing mountain streams and diversity in ecosystems as we travel up in elevation toward Lower Park on the Florida River where our camp awaits with wall tents, cots and pads. The chef is busy fixing dinner while happy hour helps to alleviate the ride in. After feasting, everyone gathers around the fire for the first of Craig’s fireside clinics.
The following three days go by way too fast as Craig comes up with all kinds of exercises and games that will expand the skills of everyone while his contagious laugh keeps us all entertained. Terry, Randy and the Over the Hill Outfitters staff will give a horse and mule packing seminar and a leave-no-trace-camping clinic. Between all of this, we will be riding the spectacular trails in the Florida Basin enjoying the magnificent scenery of the Weminuche Wilderness.
This trip includes boarding at the Palmer Quarter Horse Ranch during the clinic at the ranch and after the trip, gourmet meals and a complete camp. All you need to bring is your personal gear, a sleeping bag, and a horse and saddle. We can also provide one of our own horses (most of them working Quarter Horses raised by us at Palmer Quarter Horses) if you prefer or if you don’t have a horse of your own. This trip is limited to eight people for undivided individual attention.
